In the past year NYC Media Lab, in partnership with its Member Companies, has collaborated with dozens of the City's faculty and students across disciplines ranging from engineering and computer science to design and journalism on prototyping and entrepreneurship. From explorations of blockchain and artificial intelligence to startup companies targeting markets ranging from women's health to music to digital media rights, the prototyping projects and startups that emerged from the Lab this year point to the future of emerging media applications. 

Below, see details of five projects that will participate in the Project Showcase at NYCML'18. Faculty and students will take center stage to share their research and technical developments, highlighting new areas of inquiry and innovation across industries. These projects will be among more than 100 demos, 16 workshops and Mainstage presentations and discussions about the future of media. 

Impromptu

IslandAR
NYC Media Lab Program:

IslandAR provides mysterious puzzle pieces that unlock shared AR experiences, hidden characters and fun stories from past and present on Governors Island.

An exploration into the potential benefits and challenges of blockchain for media through prototyping its applications and use-cases in the near, mid, and long-term. NBCUniversal addresses how it and other media companies are approaching emerging technologies such as blockchain and artificial intelligence in order to enhance customer experience.
